History of Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church

St Andrew's was organized as a parochial mission of St. Christopher's, Springfield in November 1972. The first service was held at Burke Elementary School on December 3rd. Worship continued there through 1974, with services conducted by lay readers and supply clergy. In October 1974, the Rev. Randall Prior became St. Andrew's first full-time Vicar. Services were move to Orange Hunt Elementary School in December of that year. St. Andrew's became a church under the supervision of the bishop in January of 1975. Ground was broken for St. Andrew's first building on the Diocese of Virginia's Sydenstricker Road Property in February of 1978, and the first service was held in the new building on December 17 of that year. The Rt. Rev. David Lewis officiated the ground breaking for the expansion of the church on October 29, 1983. The present nave and sanctuary were dedicated on April 28, 1985. On January 27, 1990, Diocesan Council granted parish status -- this was the culmination of years of hard work, growth, and ministry in Christ's name by parishioners and clergy of St. Andrew's.
