Friends of Music and the Arts at St. Andrew's

In today's busy world, the opportunity to pause and to experience beauty can be a gift that can help us encounter the divine.  Artistic beauty, whether specifically conceived for sacred purposes or not, speaks to us through mystery and transcendence, qualities that are an integral part of our spiritual lives.

St. Andrew’s is blessed with a newly-renovated worship space with excellent acoustics.  These acoustics, along with our superb new pipe organ and the visual artistry of our stained glass windows, create an ideal environment for a series of special musical and other artistic events.

Friends of Music and the Arts aims to further the outreach mission of St. Andrew’s by opening the doors of our parish for a regular series of musical and other artistic events that are designed to contribute to the cultural and spiritual life of the community around us.

Our first season included our Organ Dedication recital, played by Dr. J. Reilly Lewis, a concert of instrumental music, and choral evensong.  For our second season, we have these exciting plans:

Events

  • Sunday, March 17, 2013, at 4:00 p.m.  Pergolesi: Stabat Mater (Amanda Balestrieri, soprano, and Barbara Hollinshead, mezzo-soprano) and Bach organ works.  We are extremely fortunate to be joined for this Lenten program by distinguished soloists Amanda Balestrieri and Barbara Hollinshead, accompanied by some of the area's finest period instrumentalists: Risa Browder and June Huang, baroque violins; Marta Howard, baroque viola; Amy Domingues, baroque cello, Jessica Powell Eig, violone, directed from the harpsichord by Jay Wilcox.  The program will also include two major organ works of J. S. Bach, O Lamm Gottes, unschuldig, BWV 656, and the partita on Sei gegrüßet, Jesu gütig, BWV 768.  The free-will offering will go to support FoMA.  Free child-care will be available.  A reception will follow the concert.
  • Please Note Time Change Sunday, June 2, 2013, at 7:30 p.m.  A Service of Contemplation and Prayer in the Style of Taizé.  This service will offer the opportunity to worship in a more reflective and personal way.  Experience the presence of God in this peaceful service of prayer and meditative music, led by the St. Andrew's Adult Choir, accompanied by Karan Wright, violin, Brian McCurdy, clarinet, and Jay Wilcox.  Free-will offering.
