                                                    Update January, 2009:

When our Junior Warden was asked by Saint Nicholas if the children and parents of St. Andrew's had a Christmas wish, the  answer was a resounding "News that MFT renovation project would experience not delays." Saint Nicholas could only promise that he'd do what he could.

In addition to looking out after children, sailors and firemen, Saint Nicholas may also be the patron of MFT programs. It looks like he did very well by us, indeed! Recent estimates by our prime contractor indicate that we may be able to "reclaim" our Nave, Chapel and Narthex as early as February. This is great progress on a most complex and important aspect of the MFT campaign. Many thanks to all whohave shepherded this work along. It's an inspiring enhancement to our worship and evangelism potential in so many new and exciting ways. Plans are underway now for a liturgy to celebrate the return of our worship into the welcoming and adaptable Nave as soon as that space is fully ready.

Update July, 2008:

Our general contractor for Nave renovation, Scott-Long Co., is prepared to begin construction activities as soon as the permits are acquired in August. However, in order to avoid future delays in the course of construction time needs to be taken to allow the sub contractors to order the materials needed for the project. In a meeting this week with our architect and general contractor it was determined that we would be well advised to wait two weeks to make the transition to the parish hall since the contractor can then begin construction full force and continue unabated to completion. This may well save us some time overall. Demolition and prep of the construction site will begin on September 2nd. On August 31st, we will have a liturgy of transition as we move from the Nave to the Parish Hall for worship. On that Sunday we will have the Liturgy of the Word in the Nave and then, following the peace, have a short liturgy of transition after which we will process into the Parish Hall where the service will continue with the Eucharist. Please plan to be present for this exciting beginning of our Ministry for Tomorrow construction.

All of our worship activities will take place in the Parish Hall for about six months following commencement of construction. Building permits are still expected in mid August and baptism will still be conducted as planned on August 17th.

Update June, 2008:

Sometime in June or early July, renovation construction should begin in the Nave and Chapel. When that starts, we will begin to hold all of our worship services in the Parish Hall and those areas being renovated will be closed. Construction is expected to last several months into the fall. The Parish Hall is coded for 250 people. Every attempt will be made for the service to run as it is done currently in the Nave. There will be some changes such as standing instead of keeling and piano music instead of organ. There will be a separate section for the choir. (However, the choir dos not usually sing in the summer.) At this time there will be three services: 6 p.m. Saturdays, and 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Sundays. Kids Liturgy will be held in the Multipurpose Room during the 10 a.m. service. Since the Parish Hall will be used for worship, the coffee hour will take place after the services in the Multipurpose Room.

Update March 10, 2008:

  •    Nave/Chapel/Narthex renovation planning nearing completion and final subcontractor bids in
       process
  •    Estimated construction start end of May-early June with expected completion early November
  •    Estimated timeframe for organ renovation completion near end of calendar year 2008

Update from the Renovation Committee
January 16, 2008:

We received the latest cost estimate that reduced the estimated cost for the renovation from 1.473
million to 1.111 million. Primary reasons for this reduction are:

  • Removal of a new HVAC unit (which had not been part of the initial renovation plans)

  • Removal of the skylights in the nave

We expected to further reduce costs with the redesign of the reredos and elimination of a new baptistry but we do not have sufficient information to estimate the costs.

  • The committee approved the pendant lighting fixture recommended by the architect. Twenty-eight of these pendant lights will replace the current lighting in the nave.

  • The architect presented a revsed schedule that refelcts delays related to our efforts at cost reduction. Renovation of the nave is now expected to start at the beginning of June. Although this is a slip of about two months from our initial expected start, the reduction in work resulting from our changes will cause the end of the renovation to slip by only a couple of weeks -- to the end of November. This end date still works well with the organ installation schedule.

  • The committee selected a new design for the sanctuary that retains the currurent large wooden cross, retain the current reredos but modifies it for clergy/crucifer seating and changes the front surface, and removes the current rector's prayer desk to create a space for permanent placement of the currect baptismal font. (see pdf files). The planned changes respond to all the liturgical needs of the clergy while retain elements (the cross and the current baptismal font) that the congregration has expressed a strong attachement to.

  • The architect has been asked to finalize drawings and specifications so that the general contractor can go out for bids from subcontractors.
