The mission of the Buildings and Grounds Commission is to maintain the building and grounds of St. Andrew's in the best condition possible. Responsibilities include: 1) Maintain and improve the building, including heating, cooling, cleaning, minor repairs, light fixtures, painting and other tasks as they arise; 2) Obtain cost estimates and secure professional help for major repairs or work beyond the capabilities of the Junior Warden, Sexton, or volunteers; 3) Maintain and improve the grounds, including lawn mowing, pruning shrubs, landscaping, Memorial Garden, lighting, tree removals as needed; 4) Coordinate all maintenance/repair activities with the Sexton, maximize his/her productivity and provide assistance and support to the Sexton when necessary; 5) Schedule the Spring and Fall Cleanups and advertise extensively to achieve a good volunteer turnout; 6) Assist with inventories and major moves of equipment and furnishing; 7) Purchase and order supplies needed by the Sexton for restrooms, cleaning, lights, and certain kitchen items for inside needs and also obtain mulch and fertilizer and other items needed for grounds maintenance; 8) Assess the need for and the cost of long-term or expensive repairs, advise the clergy and the vestry, and secure necessary approvals before undertaking such work.
The mission of the Communications Commission is to facilitate communication among current members as well as with prospective members and the outlying community in general. We aim to support our parish spirit and sense of community among parish members by assisting all of the ministries within the church with different communications approaches through a variety of media. The parish website, publications, audio-visual materials, photographs and signage are all tools that the Communications Commission use to further this mission. The various ministries that comprise the Communications Commission include: the Website Team, the Audio-Visual Team, the Publications Team, the Photography Team, and the Signage Team. The Website Team maintains the website and the variety of social media sites related to St. Andrew's. The Audio-Visual Team helps with video and audio recordings as well as the collection of digital recordings for the website, Facebook page, and YouTube channel. The Photography Team is comprised of an informal group of volunteers who take photographs of happenings around the parish. The Publications Team helps to edit, proofread and reformat printed materials that are authored by other ministries and groups; it also reviews the need to create new publications and then assists with its production. The Signage Team is charged with ensuring that signage located both inside (such as bulletin boards) and outside (banners and street signs)provides updated information in an appealing fashion.

The mission of the Fellowship Commission is to enhance the spiritual growth of members of the parish and the community through the development and strengthening of caring relationships in large and small group social events and activities. Large Group Events include: Fall and Winter Parish Dinners, Lenten Dinners, Spring Tea, Parish Picnic, Potomac Nationals Baseball Game, Formation Welcome Event, Monthly Fellowship Coffees/Coffee Hosts, and the Shrine Mont Retreat. Small Groups include: Book Discussion Group, Daytimers' Group, Families with Children Group, Foyer Groups, Men's Fellowship, Parish Visitation, Preschool Play Group, Softball Team, Sunday Greeters, Tuesday Stitchers Group, Women's Fellowship.
The mission of the Formation Commission is to assist all ages in a lifelong journey to the fullness of life in Christ. Responsibilities include: 1) Developing, assessing and improving Formation programs; 2) Plan, recruit volunteers, and assist with Formation-related events; 3) Recruit and train superintendents and teachers; 4) Assist in developing the annual Formation budget; 5) Serve on the Preschool Board (two members of the vestry each serve a two year term); 6) Assist and help other vestry commissions as needed. Formation Programs include: 1) Learning Center (Nursery, Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, First and Second Grade Class, and Children's Chapel); 2) Sunday School (Third and Fourth Grade Class, Fifth and Sixth Grade Class; 3) Journey to Adulthood Program (Rite 13 (Seventh and Eighth Graders, J2A (Ninth and Tenth Graders), and Young Adults in Christ (Eleventh and Twelfth Graders); 4) Adult Formation; 5) Vacation Bible School. The St. Andrew's Episcopal Preschool is another important formation component in our parish. Founded in 1985, the Preschool serves children and families in the Burke area by providing a loving, Christian atmosphere where each child can develop socially, physically, emotionally, cognitively and spiritually.
The vision of St. Andrew's Outreach Commission is to serve the needs of the sick, the poor and the neglected, the homeless and the destitute, and all who have none to care for them, responding out of our plenty, using our gifts as God intended. The mission of the Outreach Commission is to examine the needs and establish programs, or determine grants to agencies and organizations performing ministries of service in our community, the nation, and the world. We encourage volunteer efforts by parishioners on behalf of these programs and ministries. Current programs and missions include: 1) International: Carpenter's Kids, El Hogar Ministries, Inc., Five Talents, and the Holy Land Committee 2) National and Local: ECHO, ESOL, FACETS, Habitat for Humanity, Hypothermia Prevention Response Program, Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington.
The mission of the Finance and Resource Management Commission is to support St. Andrew's mission to proclaim God's love, grow spiritually and serve others through the oversight, coodination and management of parish financial resources. The two ministries that comprise the Finance and Resource Management Commission are the Finance and Budget Committee and the Stewardship Committee. The Finance and Budget Committee: 1) Provides oversight of financial matters and issues 2) Advises the vestry regarding the financial status of the church 3) Makes recommendations on church policy regarding finances (e.g., annual budget). The Stewardship Committee: 1) Coordinates year-round stewardship activity and ensures that the congregation is aware of what stewardship means at St. Andrews; 2) Presents a program of stewardship education at various times throughout the year; 3) Coordinates the fall Intention of Giving campaign; 4) Makes contact with newcomers to explain the stewardship program and follows-up on new pledges.
The mission of the Worship Commission is to provide a variety of worship avenues and opportunities so that everyone can find a place to experience the love of God and neighbor through worship, caring, sharing, and outreach. Responsibilities include: 1) Provide coordination for worship ministries, including Acolytes, Altar Guild, Choirs, Flower Guild, Kids' Liturgy, Lay Eucharistic Ministers/Lectors/Eucharistic Visitors, Prayer Guild and Ushers; 2) Provide consultation and advice to the Rector for the determination of worship procedures, schedules, special service, and music; 3) Assist in design and implementation of special seasonal worship experiences, such as in Lent and Advent; 4) the Vestry commission lead serves as an ex officio member of the board of the Friends of Music and the Arts at St. Andrew's (FOMA). Other Boards:Endowment Management Board: Board members are elected by the Vestry for three-year terms. The Board meets quarterly and provides quarterly reports ot the Vestry on the status of the St. Andrew's Endowment Fund. The Rector and the Senior Waden serve as ex officio members of the Endowment Management Board. Responsibilities include: 1) Investment and distribution of the Endowment Fund; 2) Determine annual distributions for church use; 3) Provide advice and counsel to parishioners on bequests and major gifts to the church; 4) Encourage Planned Giving through programs of education and publications on fiscal stewardship and health. Preschool Board: St. Andrew's Episcopal Preschool is a ministry of St. Andrew's to the community and is administered by the Preschool Board of the Church. The Board is comprised of ten members. Two members are from the Vestry, four members are parishioners, two members are parents of children attending the Preschool, and one member is from outside the Parish, representing the community. The Rector of the Church is a continuing member of the Board and the Preschool Director is an ex-officio member. The Preschool Board is charged with planning and supervising the Preschool's program. Duties of the Board include, but are not limited to, advising the Director regarding scheduling, determing the annual budget, setting fees and salaries, and providing guidance in personnel matters. Final authority in personnel of the Preschool rests with the Rector of the Church. The Preschool Board meets quarterly.
