  • Chalice.  Cup used for the wine in the Holy Eucharist.
  • Chancel. Elevated area where the altar and the pulpit are located.
  • Ciborium.  Covered vessel which holds bread for Holy Communion.
  • Compline.  Referring to the prayers which complete the day's worship.
  • Confirmation.  A reaffirmation of baptismal vows, with a blessing and the laying on hands by a bishop.
  • Corporal.  Square white linen cloth placed on the center of the fair linen on the altar, on which the eucharistic vessels are placed for the celebration of the Eucharist.
  • Credence.  Shelf near the the altar which holds sacramental vessels.
  • Crucifer.  The acolyte who carries the processional cross.

  • Font.  The basin which holds water for Holy Baptism.  At St. Andrew's, this is a large shell.
  • Fraction.  Ceremonial breaking of the bread during Holy Eucharist.
  • H.E. I. Holy Eucharist Rite One.  This means that Holy Communion is celebrated in the service using the format beginning on page 323 of the prayer book.  St. Andrew's 8am Sunday worship service is always Rite I.
  • H.E. II.  Holy Eucharist Rite Two.  The Holy Communion is celebrated in the service using the contemporary wording.  Usually, St. Andrew's 6pm Saturday service and 10am Sunday service use Rite II.
  • Host.  A wafer made of unleavened bread used for the Holy Eucharist.
  • Intinct. Process of dipping the host in the wine instead of drinking from the chalice.
  • Kids' Liturgy.  A worship time in the parish hall designed for children third grade through sixth grade.   Kids' Liturgy begins at 10am Sunday mornings; during the passing of the peace the children rejoin their families in the Nave.
  • Lavabo.  Bowl used for the act of cleansing the celebrant's hands in the Eucharist or after the imposition of ashes or oil.
  • Lay Assistant. A lay person, not ordained, in a church who may work with education, newcomers, volunteers, and programs.  Lisa Wakeley is our lay assistant at St. Andrew's.
  • Learning Center.  Education time on Sunday mornings from 10am to 12:15pm for children ages newborn through second grade. Parents are encouraged to retrieve their children from the Learning Center to bring them to the altar rail for Communion.
  • Lectionary.  The appointed system of scripture readings for the days of the church year.
  • Lector.  A lay assisting minister who reads the first and second readings from Scripture in the Eucharistic liturgy.
  • Liturgy.  The prescribed worship services of the church.
  • Matins.  Morning service of scripture reading; also known as Morning Prayer.
  • Memorial Garden.  A garden located on the church property in which ashes are mixed with the soil for interment after cremation.  At St. Andrew's, the Memorial Garden is located between the walls of the church and the playground fence.
  • Multipurpose Room. The large, tile floored room behind the kitchen.  Adult forums usually occur in this room, as well as special events and meetings.
  • Narthex.  The entry way in the church before going into the worship space.
  • Nave.  The worship space in a church; the area with the pews, not including the altar area. 
  • Ordinary.  The parts of the liturgy which do not change from week to week.
  • Pall.  Square of linen placed over the rim of the chalice.
  • Parish Hall.  The large carpeted room for fellowship where coffee and refreshments are available.
  • Paschal Candle.  Large white candle placed near the altar and lit during the Easter season, symbolizing Christ's resurrected presence.  At other times of the year it is placed near the font and lit for Holy Baptism, and placed at the head of the coffin and lit for the burial liturgy.
  • Paten.  Plate used to hold bread or hosts during the Eucharist.
  • Piscina.  A special drain in the sacristy which goes directly into the ground, used for disposing the water and wine remaining after the Holy Communion.
  • Prior Chapel.  A small worship area directly across from the Nave and accessed from the Narthex.  Eucharist is celebrated here every Wednesday morning.
  • Processional Cross.  A cross or crucifix on a tall staff used to lead the procession.
  • Propers.  The segments of the Eucharistic service which are appointed for each day of the church year.
  • Pulpit.  Raised part in the chancel from which the gospel may be read and the sermon delivered.
  • Purificator.  Square piece of linen used to clean the rim of the chalice during Holy Communion.
  • Rector.  The clergy member who leads the parish.  Reverend Gary Goldacker is the Interim Rector of St. Andrew's as we go through a period of discernment and then a prayerful search process.  Reverend Jeanie Martinez is our Assistant Rector.
  • Sacristy.  A room used for storing and preparing items needed in worship.  At St. Andrew's, this is located behind the altar area.
  • Sanctuary Lamp. Symbolizing the reserved sacrament, this is a constantly burning candle mounted on the chancel wall.  At St. Andrew's this is located on the wall by the pulpit.
  • Seminarian.  A student at a seminary studying to become a minister.  St. Andrew's has one seminarian from the Virginia Theological Seminary, Jo Belser.
  • Torch.  Large candle on a staff carried in processions, often flanking the processional cross.  An acolyte who carries the torch is called the torchbearer.
  • Veil.  Cloth placed over sacramental vessels before and after the celebration of Holy Communion.
  • Vespers.  An evening worship service of scriptural readings and prayer.  Also known as Evening Prayer.
  • Vestry.  The twelve elected members of a church who work with the Rector in church leadership matters.  Vestry terms are for three years with four members elected on an annual basis.  The vestry members are also chairpersons of commissions.  The vestry of St. Andrew's meets on the second Monday of the month at 7pm.  Meetings are open for anyone to attend.  Current members of the vestry are: Woody Browne, San Cannon, Pat Conrad,  Libby Fike, Mark Foster, Tom Horan, Fred Kalema, Melinda Morgan, Vanessa Parks, Carol Robinson, Kevin Rozelsky, Paul Umberger.
  • Wardens. The vestry member nominated by the Rector and elected by the vestry to assume a leadership role in the vestry.  Pat Conrad is our Senior Warden and Vanessa Parks is our Junior Warden.
